Underground mining is the oldest method of mining coal. From the late 1970s to early 1980s open pit operations increased, achieving high quantities of production and lower production costs. However, today, with environmental considerations and the greater depth of coal seam deposits, underground mining is proving to be the more viable alternative.
This mine is an open pit mine producing 5,000 tonnes ore and 5,000 tonnes waste per day. Rock characteristics for both ore and waste are typical of those of granite or porphyritic material. Operating conditions, wage scales, and unit prices are typical for western U.S. mining operations. All costs listed are in 2012 US$.
An accurate detection of coal-seam depth is very important to improve production efficiency, in particular, for an overnight operation. We studied a method for detecting a coal seam, at an acceptable additional cost, using the seismic noise generated from drilling blasting holes at an open-pit mine.

Mining Equipment Costs. Mining Equipment Fleet - 10,000 tonne per day (ore + waste) open pit mine. The equipment listed here represents a typical suite of equipment for a 10,000 tonne per day (5,000 tpd ore + 5,000 tpd waste) surface mine with a 3,500 ft. ore haul and a 1,800 ft. waste haul.
There are eight individual cost categories for both capital and operating costs, plus a total cost equation for each. Electrical costs are a small cost component for the open pit mine models and are included in the construction material category.
The open pit coal mines production system consist mainly in a string of equipment starting with winning equipment (bucket wheel excavator), on board hauling equipment , conveying equipment, transfer devices, spreaders or stackers , used alternatively for
capacity than corresponding open pit equipment. Furthermore, the large production scale and share number of open pit mines have provided the opportunity for manufacturing open pit equipment in large numbers, thus reducing production costs even further. Open pit machinery can also be used for other purposes such as civil construction, whereas

Table 2 endeavours to collect operating and capital cost of 20 Australian open pit coal mines with their production rates. As can be seen in Table 2 real data for Australian mines were not readily available. However, the authors estimated a reliable range for those variables.
• Current estimates for coal and waste mining costs adopted an open-pit approach, separating production into two mining phases, which allows Ascot to produce the best economic outcome for mine start-up by minimising strip ratios, and maximising coal quality and cash flow.
